Day 11

June 19th, 2010

We stopped for gas half way into our trip at some small junction town along Sunrise Highway. I got out to stretch and looked around. The sun was gleaming off of the the hood ornament, a couple of sparrows were fighting around the roof overhang at the convent store.  Looking out into the highway as cars passed, I started to think about this adventure we were undertaking…People don’t just find something like this and act like they are going to see a road side attraction. Its all going too well, was I being paranoid? I don’t know. I just knew from this point forward, I had to have some reservations about my trust for him.  He came back from the restroom; “Ready?” he said. “Yep, lets go.” As soon as I closed the door a blue van pulled out from the side of the dumpster in front of us. I immediately though it was keeping tabs on us. I didn’t say anything to Alden, it was just a crazy gut feeling.

An hour and a half later we had arrived at Camp Hero Park. Close by was the Air force Base, we parked at the park and started our hike around the side of the Base. We walked down this old road that had been restricted to public traffic and up to this bunker that nature was starting to reclaim. (Here are some photos of the building. ) He walked around to the far left side of the bunker where there was a small rusted hatch. He looked at it trying to figure out a way to get in. “You wouldn’t happen to have a crowbar on you would you? Said Alden in a carefree manner. ” No, but will this work?” I said as I pulled a rock hammer from my pack. I gave the lock a few hard whacks of the hammer until I punched a hole and was able to pry the lock from the door. He opened it and pulled on a manual release lever. “What was that?” I said, feeling even more paranoid about everything. “It’s a manual override for the door.” He showed me a big metal door with no handles on the side of the building. We pried it open and went inside. I pulled out my key chain light. “It looked like they had cut power to the bunker” he showed me cut cables. “Forget it, just follow me” We went into a larger room and there I saw it. About 30′ in diameter, it was a hole. This doesn’t, quite look like the same thing, like in the photos? “It’s not, well not anymore, but it use to be. “This base was initially built around this hole, nobody ever knew of its existence. It all started one day in 1941 when a land surveyor was surveying the land to erect the fort…
